St. James Church is situated in the Kashmere Gate area of Old Delhi. Believed to be the oldest surviving Church of Delhi, it was constructed by James Skinner, the son of a Scottish father and a Rajput mother.The church was started in 1826 and completed ten years later. During the Uprising of 1857 the Chruch was damaged by shellfire. The dome of the chruch is topped by a copper ball and cross, which was used by sepoys in 1857 for target practice. The church is designed in a cruciform plan with the altar facing towards the eastern direction and entrance towards the western direction. A ball and a cross surmount the dome of the church. The grave of Jmaes Skinner lies in front of the altar of this church. St. James Church also contains many other graves of British Commissioners of Delhi including William Fraser.Jmaes Skinner died in mid 19th century but a regiment of the same name still serves the Indian Army. Hence the Indian Army is attached to the church in some way. The grave of James Skinner is located in the complex of St James Church just in front of the altar. As far as his personal life is concerned, he married fourteen times and his family is also buried with him to the north of the church. The church complex also contains the grave of one of the finest British Commissioners of Delhi, William Fraser near the large Memorial Cross erected in memory of the 1857 revolt victims.
