Situated at the south end of Bhai Vir Singh Marg in New Delhi, the Roman Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart was designed by Henry Medd.Cathedral of the Sacred Heart is one of the best known and visited churches in India. The likes of Sir Edwin Lutyens, Father Luke and Henry Medd have been associated with The Church of Redemption. The 14 acres of land, which forms the cathedral grounds, was acquired in 1920 for just Rs 7000, complete with a perpetual lease and a yearly rental of Rs 365. One can clearly see the Italian influence in its structure.Two of the most prestigious schools of Delhi, Saint Columba’s and Convent of Jesus and Mary flank the either side of the church. The church was completed in 1933-34 with almost all of the decoration donated by wealthy and influential people of that time. The facade of white pillars, supporting the canopy, looks beautiful and attractive. Their setting against a dark brick background lends them an ethereal charm.Today the cathedral stands between two schools, Saint Columbas’ and Convent of Jesus and Mary. Prayers are held everyday in the morning and evening and the Cathedral also organizes functions on certain days of the year like Easter and Christmas. The most important of the festivities during Christmas is the Feast of the Holy Family of Nazareth and the Christmas vigil service, an hour before midnight on Christmas Eve. On each side of the cathedral’s entrance porch, there are circular arcaded turrets rising above the roof. The interiors look grand and lavish with their towering curved roof, polished stone floors and broad arches. The idea of constructing the church was nurtured by Father Luke. He belonged to the Franciscan First Order, founded by St. Francis of Assisi (1182-1226). Rev Dr. E. Vanni, Archbishop of Agra in 1929, laid the foundation stone of the cathedral and the construction began in 1930. The idea of constructing the church was nurtured by Father Luke.
