Ferozshah Kotla Stadium is one of the premiere cricket stadiums of India. It is situated at Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg of Delhi. The Delhi Ferozshah Kotla Stadium was established in the year of 1883. Ferozshah Kotla Stadium was named after the emperor Ferozshah Tughlaq. The Feroz Shah Kotla is a cricket ground in Delhi, India. The first match was played here on November 10, 1948.Anil Kumble took 10 wickets in an innings on this ground in 1999, only the second time this feat has been achieved in test cricket. It underwent renovations in 2005.Now home to the Delhi Daredevils for the IPL, Kotla has also been home to a host of distinguished cricketers India has produced, including Chetan Chauhan, Bishen Singh Bedi and more recently the likes of Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and Ishant Sharma. Ferozshah Kotla Stadium in Delhi is famous for cricket all over the world. The stadium is owned by Delhi District Cricket Association.However, Kotla’s existence as an international venue once came under threat as an ODI between India and Sri Lanka was abandoned in 2009 due to a dangerous pitch.England’s John Lever had a memorable debut at the Kotla in 1976, when he notched up a half-century and had match figures of 10 for 70.The eastern wall of the citadel was built on a bank of the River Yamuna. It is said that Feroz Shah erected this citadel here in spite of having three palaces in Delhi because of the shortage of water in those areas. Among the three enclosures of the citadel, the central one is the largest and is presently called as ‘Kotla Feroz Shah’ as one can only find the ruins of the northern and southern enclosures amidst the modern constructions. Five years later, Geoff Boycott surpassed Gary Sobers’ world record Test aggregate. In 1983-84, Sunil Gavaskar scored his 29th century to equal Don Bradman’s long standing record for the highest number of hundreds in Test cricket. In 2005-06, at the same ground, Sachin Tendulkar broke Gavaskar’s record of most centuries with his 35th Test century. Located northwest of the Ashokan pillar, just in the center of the garden is a fine large circular baoli or step well. The baoli has subterranean apartments. It has a large underground drain for the water towards its eastern side. Like all other baolis, this baoli also served as a cool retreat in summer and was used by persons of royal lineage. Apart from these monuments there are ruins of many other structures, which have not been identified as yet, because of their present dilapidated shape. For example the foundation structure of a square hall to the north of Jami Mosque and behind Ashokan Pillar, the southern most building of central the enclosure where one can find mosaic work and many more.

Ashokan Pillar of 3rd Century BC At Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium Delhi:

Located north of Jami Masjid in the citadel stands the 13 meters high sandstone Ashokan Pillar on a rubble-built three-tired pyramidal structure. Feroz Shah Tughlaq brought this 27 tonne pillar to Delhi from Topar in Ambala, where the great Emperor Ashoka erected it. The pillar is similar to the one fixed on the ridge, which was also brought by Feroz Shah. The transportation of both the pillars were done with much care and precautions to avoid any damage.Ashokan Pillar has been carved with seven main inscriptions or edicts of Emperor Ashoka. Apart from that, there are numerous figures and minor inscriptions engraved on the pillar. The edicts were written in the Brahmi script of Pali language and were first deciphered by James Prinsep in 1837. The pillar is made of sandstone. However, it was polished in such manner that even today it looks as if it has been made up of some metal. Since Feroz Shah adorned the pillar during his rule, it came to be known as ‘Minar-i-Zarin’.

One of the memorable incidents was when Ghulam Ahmed and Hemu Anand from the Indian team created the record for the 10th wicket. The stadium also witnessed yet another match between the Indian team against Pakistan, where the ace cricketer Anil Kumble took 10 wickets on his own.
